Chapter 23. External backup
The most important thing is that daily backup functions easily and precisely. But it is also important to secure your data with extra copies independent of the computer.
It is a really good idea to have a security copy of all your data on a disk, which isn't permanently connected to your computer. When you follow the daily copy routine as described in the last chapter, the external copy disk doesn't have to be updated every day. You can, for example, make security copies once a week, every Friday maybe.
The external disk can be a USB based hard disk box, as shown in Figure 112 on page 75. This is a really good solution, which I would recommend for everyone. Among other things it makes it possible to re-use a redundant hard disk. The hard disk can easily be installed in a USB box, which can be purchased for a few hundred kroner.
Another way of doing it is to use a hard disk on another computer in the network as backup media. This is practical but you can risk losing data, if a bad virus hits the network. So an external box gives maximum security. We have several of them and they can easily be transported to another building if you are afraid of a fire or a burglary.
In all circumstances it isn't always smart to use the same XCOPY commands, which are used for the daily backup. I usually use Total Commander, which is described earlier in the booklet.
When the USB box is connected to my computer, it is given the drive letter K. So I have created a shortcut in the Commander (created with Control+d), which shows the contents of the folder D:\Texts in the left window and the contents of K:\Textback2 in the right window.
The shortcut makes it quicker to activate the two folders, which are backed up. Then you just have to type Control+plus to mark all the files and folders in the left window and 5 to start the copying.
By clicking on the button Overwrite older (see Figure 65 on page 48), only the files, which have been altered compared with the destination folders content are copied. This works really well.
